Sarah Blacker live at the NORTH STAR MUSIC CAFE

Sarah Blacker (from Boston) stuns listeners when she tells them she’s a beginner at this. She awes them when she belts out soulful bluesy and jazzy tones while standing at a mere 5’3″ tall. She impresses them when admitting that she used to be a full-time Music Therapist for children with special needs, and she connects with them when she proudly announces that she is following her dreams, and so shouldn’t every single one of them.

City

Weekly Memorandum From Gardiner’s City Manager

As I noted in an email to you earlier this week, the “Jacob’s Ladder” staircase that connects Neal and Robinson streets had to be removed by the City because of unsafe conditions. It had been cordoned off from public use for a few months after a visit to the site revealed it was in disrepair. I have confirmed with Code Enforcement Officer David Cichowski that the quotes received to replace the stairway – between $8,000 – $19,000 – were essentially just to replace the existing structure and would not necessarily comply with current stair codes or ADA requirements.

Music

Robbie Fulks, Roomful of Blues and Ukulele Summit Coming to One Longfellow Square

As a songwriter Fulks is difficult to define. Many of his compositions are silly, funny or spoof songs, while others are serious country songs. One album, 2001′s Couples in Trouble comes off more as an experimental rock album than as country. A good example of the alternative nature of some of his work is the song Godfrey (“the sickly, unemployed, amateur children’s magician”) on the compilation album for children The Bottle Let Me Down.

Indie/Alternative Music by Mike Doughty at The Strand Theatre in Rockland

Mike Doughty (“looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well “, “I Hear Bells”, and “Busting Up a Starbucks”), is an American Indie and Alternative singer/song-writer and former lead singer for the jazzy/electronic, not-quite-mainstream band Soul Coughing. He now has a strong and flourishing solo career, and has since returned to his acoustic roots on his latest disc, Sad Man, Happy Man (2009).

Film

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child at Strand Theater in Rockland for One Screening Only

Finish an evening of art and festivities in downtown Rockland with this compelling new documentary film. Centered on a rare interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Basquiat over twenty years ago, this definitive documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the young artist. In the crime-ridden NYC of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO.

FOR CHILDREN is The Canterville Ghost at The Theater at Monmouth

When an American family moves to a historic home in Britain, they find the ghostly Sir Simon as an unexpected houseguest. Wilde’s tale pokes fun at money-solves-all-problems sensibilities, but is also the charming tale of a frustrated ghost and the young girl who believes in his goodness.
