Pull Out Your Calendar and Check Off the 18th of July
The energy is already in the air. Old Hallowell Day is approaching. On that day the streets of this quaint community will become crowded with locals, ex-locals, and visitors. Everyone will enjoy musicians, representing a variety of venues, and the works of many great artists. Hallowell’s celebration is special because it epitomizes a place that works hard to be what a community should be. Hallowell comes close to achieving that goal because, in an imperfect world, this city is truly inviting, invigorating and spontaneous.
Here’s what we know so far:
Hallowell will begin their celebration early. No surprise there! At nine o’clock Hatties will host a pre-parade event. Bartender and artist Bruce Mayo will be featuring live entertainment and his famous Mai Tais, other exotic drinks, along with their first rate, and I believe free, appetizers.
It’s quite likely that many people who contributed to this great community will be in attendance. Maybe people like Miss Liberty, Georgine, Steve and Wendy, Jim, Bob and BJ, Frank, Linda, Mary, Carolyn, along with the perpetual spirit of Mayor Barry Timson and many others.
Of course, all of Hallowell’s eateries and pubs will present their own festive approach as the day progresses. We’ll keep you apprised on all that.

Got the family? On the waterfront will be many food vendors offering up a more carnival fare that satisfies everyone’s craving for the occasional fried dough fix, blown-up onions, or deep fried French fries. Kiosks, offering a variety of wares, will also be in scattered about town. These vendors are noted for offering something of interest to everyone.
Everyone will be ready for the parade when it starts promptly at 10 am. Expect many local entries, invited participants and the usual amount of surprises. This parade is not to be missed.
Between the close of the parade and Hallowell’s famous fireworks display, there is never a dull moment. Renown for it’s musical history, Hallowell will feature multiple bands at several locations all day long and into the evening. If history holds true, you find public stages at Slates Bakery, at the bottom of Winthrop Hill and under the tent and inside The Wharf. We will be sure to update you when more information becomes available.
As for the fireworks in Hallowell, they speak for themselves. By the thousands, people crowd Hallowell’s waterfront to experience fireworks that light up the entire skyline, full of color, and mind blowing finales that seem to never end.
More importantly, I encourage you to experience the grand experiment that is Hallowell. Be with us as we celebrate the spirit of fostering community, expanding local control, while also encouraging and supporting local businesses and promoting the talented people that live, work and shop here.
Be sure to follow our daily updates on Old Hallowell Day. (G.T.)
