maine state museum During February school vacation week, the Maine State Museum in Augusta offers activities for the whole family to enjoy.  These opportunities for hands-on exploration and family fun are suitable for all ages and are free with the price of museum admission.

Wednesday, February 17

10:00-12:00 At Home In Maine Attic Games – Families are invited to explore the At Home in Maine exhibit, relax in our attic, and play some old-fashion and classic games.

2:00-4:00 Paper Quilts: Playing with Triangles – Take a closer look at 1870our latest quilt on view in the At Home in Maine exhibit, “Delectable Mountains” by Ellen Stone Patterson of Industry, Maine from the 1870s. After viewing this beautiful quilt, design your own quilt out of paper.

Thursday, February 18

10:00-12:00 Nature Touch CartTouch a coyote pelt, examine a fox skull, and learn how to use a field guide. The Nature Touch Cart is full of natural science specimens to be handled and explored with the help of the museum’s educators.

2:00-4:00 Fish Printing – Before cameras, fishermen often recorded large or unusual sea life by making inky prints of their catch. Try your hand at making these beautiful, scientifically accurate prints without having to catch real fish.

Friday, February 19

10:00-12:00 Create a Wabanaki Cap – Can you find the Glengarry cap or the peaked cap?  Explore the Uncommon Threads: Wabanaki Textiles, Clothing, and Costume exhibit, take a close look at the caps, and make your own version.

In addition to native cap-making, families also have the opportunity to take an in-depth look at objects and images made by Maine’s early people. The following free, 30-minute hands-on programs will be featured:

11:00-3:00 Celebrate Chinooks at the Maine State Museum free Family Event!

View our newest exhibit The Story of an American Breed in Maine featuring objects from the museum’s new Perry Greene Kennel collection. Meet live Chinook dogs, join us for talks by Chinook breeders and dog sledders, and draw a picture of your pet and add it to the pet portrait wall.

The Maine State Museum is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm.
