Generous patrons of the arts supported the Harlow Gallery in a big way yesterday (2/13/10). The number being bounced around when I was in there today to pick up pieces that we had bid on was that $4,000 dollars had been collected thus far.
The auction drew broad public attention since it coincided with Hallowell’s Annual Mardi Gras celebration.
Debbie and I acquired a splendid 18” X 24” photo of an 1800’s barn raising for a mere $30 and a photograph of a Great Blue Heron (also in reflection) landing on the Kennebec River for only $25.
Well over 100 pieces were on display for the auction. All items were original pieces of art donated by friends of the gallery to promote and expand Maine’s artistic community through the Harlow’s presence that opens doors for artists, increases art awareness and presents educational opportunities for students of the arts in Hallowell and surrounding communities.

I was also told that total revenues derived from this event could grow because they were still collecting money from items already sold and were offering items for bid at show minimums until the gallery closed for business today.
What You Should Know About The Harlow Gallery
The Harlow Gallery is owned, directed and supported by the Kennebec Valley Art Association (KVAA), a membership based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1959. The KVAA supports the artistic development of our member artists, both amateur and professional, by providing opportunities for exhibition and other professional development at the Harlow Gallery. These include workshops, lectures, demonstrations and other special events. Our policy is to make our space available to a broad range of artists’ groups for meetings and events that are important to artistic growth and for the exchange of ideas.
Because we believe the arts are integral to a well-rounded and vibrant community, and can be a key factor in personal growth and self- improvement, we strive to involve the greater community in the arts and to invite them into the Harlow Gallery at every opportunity.
