Message received moments ago from The Maine Marijuana Initiative.
Today all our hard work has finally paid off — the Maine Medical Marijuana Act has gone into effect and is now state law.
Details about the operation of dispensaries and the issuing of I.D. cards still need to be worked out — but as of today, Maine’s medical marijuana patients and their caregivers enjoy protections they have never had before.
No more seizure of people’s medicine.
No more long legal battles to prove that you are a qualified patient.
No more fear that you will lose your job or your home or your kids just for using your medicine.
None of this would have been possible without your hard work and the wisdom and compassion of Maine’s voters.
There is much to be done still in the coming months to make sure that the voters’ will is carried out and dispensaries are allowed to operate in ways that allow them to meet patients’ needs.
But today is a day to celebrate — thank you for everything you have done to make this day possible!
It just may be we will be successful in achieving the ultimate goal of decriminalizing the use and possession of of marijuana for personal use.
