mountains of maine Hiker and outdoorsman Steve Pinkham will give a PowerPoint presentation on his new book, The Mountains of Maine  Unique Stories Behind Their Names at Lithgow Public Library on Thursday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the library’s historic Reading Room.  There will be an opportunity to purchase the book at the presentation.

An avid outdoorsman and historian, Pinkham spent years seeking out legends and stories about the mountains of Maine.  A handful of Maine’s mountains were named by the Wabanaki tribes, while many of the state’s hills and mountains were named descriptively, such as Long Mountain, Bald Mountain and Round Mountain.  The photos in the book are from turn-of-the-century postcards.

Pinkham, a resident of Quincy, Massachusetts, is past president of Chiltern Mountain Club and has backpacked the entire New England section of the Appalachian Trail.  He has climbed the 100 highest mountains in New England and more than 150 peaks in Maine.
