SYNOPSIS: From the novel by Jay Parini comes this powerful, Oscar-nominated drama of literary passion. In the waning days of Czarist Russia, the imperious novelist Count Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) preaches a stark, ascetic philosophy that rejects materialism, in spite of his mounting wealth and fame. But when a young investigator infiltrates the ailing Count’s household, sharp conflicts emerge between the author’s earnestly-proclaimed beliefs — and his practices. Can his long-suffering wife (Helen Mirren) and daughter survive as Tolstoy spirals ever deeper into obsessions that may cost them the attainments of a lifetime?
“Helen Mirren is a lusty, roaring wonder.” ROLLING STONE
