First and foremost I would like to thank everyone that has been working on the Swine & Stein Oktoberfest Celebration that will take place on Saturday, October 2nd from 11a-7p here on Water Street in Gardiner. Also, I would like to thank the city council for having faith in our organization to put on such an event. More details to come next week about this huge party that will be happening in Downtown Gardiner.

The Theater At Monmouth (TAM) is proud to present Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance as their fall musical. This famously silly play is filled with laughter, great music, and more! Pirates, delightful young maidens, the unforgettable officers of the constabulary, and the ubiquitous Major-General Stanley (played by TAM favorite Mark S. Cartier) will once again storm the Cumston stage. TAM’s very own David Greenham will direct.

The Maine Women’s Policy Center team (staff and board members) will be hiking the Kennebec River Rail Trail for MaineShare’s annual Hike and Bike on September 2. Maine Forest Service Set to Place Ban on Out of State Firewood Usage September 1st

At a press conference tomorrow Maine Forest Service Director Alec Giffen will sign the Emergency Order that puts in place regulations for the banning of out-of-state firewood in keeping with Maine’s recently passed legislation to prevent the introduction or spread of dangerous forest insects and disease.

Maine Museums and Historical Organizations Rally to Save Important 19th Century Banners

On Thursday, August 26, sixteen Maine museums, historical organizations, and their supporters came together in an unprecedented collaboration to save an important collection of Maine artifacts, seventeen rare, 19th-century hand-painted banners commissioned by the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. The banners were purchased for $125,350 and will be housed at the Maine Historical Society in Portland.

Portland Museum of Art Participates in Space Gallery Artist Project

September 11 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Portland Museum of Art’s front patio will be the launch site for artist Andrea Zittel’s new project the Group Formerly Known as Smockshop (GFKAS), as part of SPACE Gallery’s outdoor art and music Block Party on Congress Street. Sponsored by the Quimby Colony, GFKAS members will be creating and selling products made out of rectangular-shaped fabrics on the Museum’s front patio.

A Race to Save Our Oceans: A Benefit to Research the Effects of the Gulf Oil Spill September 4th

“A Race to Save Our Oceans” is a group of nonprofit researchers who have put together a voyage down the Eastern seaboard and into the Gulf of Mexico on a research vessel. Our hope is to record and identify the health risks & toxins being introduced by the horrible Gulf Oil Spill disaster through the great indicator species… whales. In whales we see a common thread, Sperm whales specifically eat the same diet as humans i.e.: tuna and squid. Whales also acquire the same health related issues as humans, i.e.: cancer, tumors, lesions, respiratory & reproductive issues.

EDITORIAL – Two Way Traffic in Downtown Gardiner is Simply a Flawed Idea

Although I haven’t really heard that much on the issue of making Gardiner downtown open to two-way traffic, I feel compelled to speak out on this issue early because I strongly believe that to re-create the traffic pattern of the 50’s in Gardiner is summarily flawed.
